Why the Lotus was Sacred in Ancient Egypt

Among the many symbols that appeared throughout ancient Egypt, few were as revered as the lotus flower.

Emerging each morning from the waters of the Nile, the lotus would open its petals to the rising sun before gently closing again at night.  This daily cycle led the ancient Egyptians to view the flower as symbol of rebirth, renewal, and the promise of a new beginning. 

The lotus appeared in temples carvings, jewelry, artwork, and sacred ceremonies throughout Egyptian history.  It is closely associated with creation myths, where life its was believed to emerge from the primordial waters much like the lotus rising from the river's surface.

Beyond its beauty, the lotus represented transformation.  It reminded people that growth often comes after periods of darkness and that each day offers an opportunity to begin again.
